The tiny kingdom of Yurt is the perfect place--or so it seems--for someone who barely managed to graduate from the wizards' school, especially after all that embarrassment with the frogs. But Daimbert, newly hired Royal Wizard of Yurt, senses an evil spell at work. But who could be responsible?

This book was exactly what I was in the mood for. Sometimes, I feel as though a guy can overdo it with the Epic Fantasy and word-wracking events. A Bad Spell in Yurt was well-written, had great characters, some nice drama, a good plot, fun, and pleasantly and decidedly non-epic. Continue reading “A Bad Spell in Yurt by C. Dale Brittain”

Five sisters who live with their merchant father in Transylvania use a hidden portal in their home to cross over into a magical world, the Wildwood.

I really liked this book. I don’t know much about Romanian folklore, and Wildwood Dancing introduced me to a rich trove of mythology that I was excited to learn. Continue reading “Wildwood Dancing by Juliet Marillier”

Hell hath no fury like a goddess scorned. When Jessie Shimmer traveled to a nightmare underworld to save her lover, Cooper Marron, she gained magical powers . . . which soon seemed more like curses. Her beloved familiar, the ferret Pal, became a monster. Her enemies multiplied like demons. Worst of all, she hasn’t found a moment of peace to be with the man she adores.

Switchblade Goddess is the third Jessie Shimmer book, and I highly enjoyed reading it. Continue reading “Switchblade Goddess by Lucy A. Snyder”

Award-winning author Juliet Marillier’s “lavishly detailed”* Blackthorn & Grim series continues as a mysterious creature holds an enchanted and imperiled ancient Ireland in thrall. Disillusioned healer Blackthorn and her companion, Grim, have settled in Dalriada to wait out the seven years of Blackthorn’s bond to her fey mentor, hoping to avoid any dire challenges.

Tower of Thorns is an excellent sequel in the Blackthorn & Grim series. The two main characters are vivid and real. Continue reading “Tower of Thorns by Juliet Marillier”

Red Rising thrilled readers and announced the presence of a talented new author. Golden Son changed the game and took the story of Darrow to the next level. Now comes the exhilarating conclusion to the Red Rising Trilogy: Morning Star.

I think that this series is one of the best I’ve read recently. This final book is a crowning achievement for Pierce Brown. Continue reading “Morning Star by Pierce Brown”

When the obituary of Matthew Sobol, a legendary architect of computer games, is posted online, a previously dormant daemon activates, initiating a chain of events that unravels our interconnected world. It recruits, corrupts, and kills. With Sobol's secrets buried with him, and as new layers of his daemon are unleashed, it's up to Detective Peter Sebeck to wrest the world from the grasp of a malevolent, self-replicating virtual enemy before its ultimate, terrifying purpose is realized: to destroy civilization. So far, Daemon is winning.

Daemon was an exciting book, with some plausible technology. The various characters in the book are great, but I would call it more of a plot-driven story rather than a character-driven story. Continue reading “Daemon by Daniel Suarez”

The seventh book in the bestselling British madcap time-travelling series, served with a dash of wit that seems to be everyone’s cup of tea. Behind the seemingly innocuous facade of St. Mary’s Institute of Historical Research, a different kind of academic work is taking place. Just don’t call it "time travel”--these historians "investigate major historical events in contemporary time.”

** spoiler alert ** This series is just great. I really enjoy the inventive situations in which the Historians end up. Continue reading “Lies, Damned Lies, and History by Jodi Taylor”

Innkeeper Chronicles #2 Dina DeMille doesn’t run your typical Bed and Breakfast. Her inn defies laws of physics, her fluffy dog is secretly a monster, and the only paying guest is a former Galactic tyrant with a price on her head. But the inn needs guests to thrive, and guests have been scarce, so when an Arbitrator shows up at Dina's door and asks her to host a peace summit between three warring species, she jumps on the chance.

I liked this book even better than the first. Dina is a fun and unusual character to read about, because instead of going off in search of adventure, she is tied to her Inn. Adventure comes to her doorstep. I liked the expansion of Sean’s and Arland’s characters. The story is fun and fast-paced. Looking forward to reading the next one.

Magic is an abomination. It spread from the Rift, a great chasm hundreds of miles long that nearly split the southern continent in two. The Rift was a portal, a gateway between their world of science and the mythological world of magic. On the northern continent of Ocker, King Godwin declared that no magical monstrosity would be allowed within their borders. The Royal Inquisitors were formed to investigate reports of mystical occurrences and, should they be found, to destroy them.

A great set of ideas for a book. This combines steampunk, magic, zeppelins, werewolves, and all sorts of stuff – but it combines them in a way that is sensible and doesn’t overload the story with unnecessary nonsense. Continue reading “Wolves of the Northern Rift by Jon Messenger”

"On the outside, Dina Demille is the epitome of normal. She runs a quaint Victorian Bed and Breakfast in a small Texas town, owns a Shi-tzu named Beast, and is a perfect neighbor, whose biggest problem should be what to serve her guests for breakfast. But Dina is... different: Her broom is a deadly weapon; her Inn is magic and thinks for itself. Meant to be a lodging for otherworldly visitors, the only permanent guest is a retired Galactic aristocrat who can't leave the grounds because she's responsible for the deaths of millions and someone might shoot her on sight.

Ever since being kidnapped from the Illiais Jungle as a child, Yelena Zaltana's life has been fraught with peril. But the recent loss of her Soulfinding abilities has endangered her more than ever before. As she desperately searches for a way to reclaim her magic, her enemies are closing in, and neither Ixia nor Sitia is safe for her anymore. Especially since the growing discord between the two countries and the possibility of a war threatens everything Yelena holds dear.

I enjoyed this book greatly, because of Yelena’s need to cope without powers and because of her realization that she wasn’t helpless without them. The intrigue was exciting, and the action was a wild ride. Waiting for the next book in the series with anticipation!

I loved the flow of this book. It switched from first person to third person, depending on whether Yelena was the focus of the chapter or not, and I really enjoyed the technique (in fact, it took me forever to notice – it flowed that seamlessly). Continue reading “Shadow Study by Maria V. Snyder”

A fun short story with Ari and Janko, available for free here: http://www.mariavsnyder.com/powerstudy.php

It was fun and engaging for a short story, but I can’t really rave about it because it is short. Definitely worth reading and it fills in a couple gaps in the plot between books 3 and 4 in the Study series.
